HOW TO USE THE MOVIE STUDY PACKETS
  1. Purchase, rent, or borrow the film on either VHS or DVD.
  2. Complete the first Vocabulary Exercise:  These are challenging, so
    don't expect to get all the answers correct.  Give each answer a try
    before consulting the Answer Sheet.  Review the vocabulary lists often
    to learn the standard words, the idioms, and the slang expressions.
  3. Watch the first section of the Viewing Guide.  Listen for the
    Vocabulary Words and check them off when you hear them.  They are
    listed in the order they appear in the movie.  Also, the questions on
    the Viewing Guide come in the correct order.  You may stop and
    replay sections of the film in order to find the answers.
  4. Go on to the next Vocabulary Exercise and its corresponding Viewing
    Guide until you have viewed the complete film.
  5. Take the Test.
  6. Watch the whole movie for greatly enhanced understanding and
    appreciation.

This film is
excellent for
technology
vocabulary and
for a picture of
the U.S. space
program.
DANCES WITH
WOLVES
, an
Academy Award
winning film starring
and directed by Keven
Costner, shows a
sympathetic view of
the Native American
population as
Europeans began to
take over their lands
and destroy their
cultures.
In ERIN BROCKOVICH
Julia Roberts won the
best actress award for her
portrayal of a real-life
woman who rose from
rags to riches in her
pursuit of corporate
polluters.  This film is
excellent for
environmental and legal
vocabulary.  The
language, however, is
quite racy.
FINDING FORRESTER
is about teaching,
writing, and
life-changing
friendship.  It shows
life in an American
ghetto. A young genius
and a famous writer
overcome their fears.  
It's great for vocabulary
in writing, creativity
and basketball.  Great
for teenagers & adults.
Tom Hanks won an
Oscar for
FORREST
GUMP
, a mentally
challenged man who
leads a fascinating
life through the
major events of
American cultural
history from 1950 to
1985.  This film is
fantastic for
learning about
American culture.
THE GHOST AND
THE DARKNESS
is
an action-adventure
based on an
amazing true story
about lions in
Africa.  It's about
courage and
survival.  If you like
scary films and are
interested in the
Dark Continent,
this movie is for you.
THE GODFATHER is
known as one of the
greatest films ever
made in America.  It
was awarded many
Oscars.  It shows a
dark side of America
and is quite violent in
spots.  A hit with
business students, the
film is a must-know
for anyone interested
in U.S. culture.
THE GODFATHER,
PART 2
, is a product of
creative genius in
film-making.  It's
divided between the past
of the first Godfather
and his son's ongoing
career as a Mafia don.  
It's violent and
intellectually
challenging, a
masterpiece of drama
and suspense.
GORILLAS IN THE MIST
is the true story of Dian
Fosse, a naturalist who
was murdered during her
study of mountain
gorillas in Africa.  
Brillianty played by
Sigourney Weaver, Fosse
is both a liberated woman
and an obsessed
environmentalist. The
film shows the horrors of
wildlife poaching.
THE HURRICANE is
based on the true story
of Rubin Carter, a
champion boxer
convicted of a triple
homicide and sent to
prison for life.  After
nineteen years and an

study.  A boy bullied

The movie instructs us
not only about the
martial arts but about
Japanese culture and
human trust.
Robin Williams is
perfect as
PATCH
ADAMS
, a medical
student who believes
laughter is as effective
as drugs for healing.  
But this revolutionary
approach to medicine
gets him into a lot of
trouble.  It's based on
a true story and is
good for medical
vocabulary.
In 1991, three gigantic
storms met in the
Atlantic.  
THE
PERFECT STORM
is
based on the true
story of some
fishermen who fight
wind, rain and waves.  
The film is good for
weather and fishing
words.  It reminds us
of the power of
natural forces.
Dustin Hoffman and
Tom Cruise star in
this warm-hearted
account of an autistic
savant's trip across
the U.S. with his
greedy brother.  Both
characters change.  
RAIN MAN won
many Oscars.  It's
excellent for family
and finance
vocabulary.
Those fascinated with
America's space
program will enjoy
THE RIGHT STUFF.  
This true story shows
us the first
astronauts.  A
companion to Apollo
13, it's great for
technical words and
for a chapter in
American history and
culture.
ROCKY is the
classic rags-to-riches
story.  A street bum
rises almost to
become world
champion. Sylvester
Stallone wrote,
starred in, and
choreographed this
Acadamy Award
winning film.  It's
very funny in spots,
but also violent.
For those who like
science fiction and have
a fascination with the
idea of aliens,
STARMAN is the
ticket.  A visitor comes
to Earth to learn about
human beings, our
language and culture.  
ESL students can learn
along with the space
traveler.  It's also a
great love story.
TOOTSIE is an
Oscar-winning film
staring Dustin Hoffman
who impersonates a
woman because he needs
an acting job.  His
cross-dressing leads to
hilarious comedy.  The
movie deals with women's
liberation and gives us a
glimpse of the world of
acting, theater and
television.
Twisters are violent
storms that hit
America's midwest,
destroying life and
property.  The film
TWISTER depicts a
group of storm-chasers
and scientists.  It's
also a love story.  The
special effects are
amazing.  It's
excellent for weather
vocabulary.
WALL STREET is
director Oliver Stone's
depiction of the American
financial scene in the
'80s, its greed and lust for
power.  Michael Douglas
won an Oscar for best
actor.  It's a fantastic film
for business words and
idioms, but the the speech
is fast and often difficult.  
It will challenge even
advanced students.
WITNESS is an action
suspense  thriller in which
Harrison Ford plays a
detective who must hide
out in an Amish
community.  The Amish
are a religious cult that
rejects modern technology.
 It's a love story also.  
German speakers will hear
a dialect of their native
language.  There is a brief
nude scene.
